The Girl Soldier

Adong sings the rhymes and swings her arms in sheer delight
School was so much fun today, grammar and all
The long black barrel of a gun touches the tip of her nose
Adong screams and kicks her legs in utter fright
But the men in green don’t care at all
The long black barrel of a gun knocks her unconscious

She awakes in the middle the dark, painful night
Where the stars hide in disgust
And the diffident moon prefers the cover of the clouds
The cricket’s song is subdued
She looks around her, soldiers camouflaged in the darkness
Shoulders bent by the weight of the rifles

The heavy gun now hangs on her scrawny shoulders
Her body a collage of torture marks
Shrapnel scars on her left arm
Mutilations on her buttocks from a million beatings

Adong’, a bird that knows no song
A flower that knows no bloom
